0. Relative to the safety of pets during emergency declarations 1. Whenever the governor issues an emergency declaration that includes an evacuation order, any hotels in areas to which people are to be evacuated, which are being required to shelter evacuated persons, shall also be required to shelter any pets belonging to those evacuated persons. 2. The provisions of this legislation shall be carried out in compliance with the federal Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act), and shall fill in any gaps left uncovered by the PETS Act, including, but not limited to, extending the requirement for pet sheltering from FEMA shelters to any other shelters that evacuation orders may use for sheltering that are currently left uncovered by the PETS Act. 3. The State Department of Health and Human Services shall organize Disaster Animal Response Teams and craft a written plan for ensuring that disaster pet evacuations are carried out in compliance with the PETS Act.
