            1. Anyone know of a tool to convert documents from the version of MS Works that would’ve worked on a Mac LC II to a more modern format? The discussion of the Iraq War’s anniversary made me go dig up my diary from the time to see if I wrote about it…

It’s mostly plain-text but with all sorts of formatting artifacts that look like junk characters, which prevent me from just copying-and-pasting it as-is. Note that file(1) doesn’t recognize the format…

This is how the text looks without any reformatting; the stuff like the stray “J” and “L” and “M” and “H” and “/“ and “F” and “N” and “0” and “!” and “6” and “G” and “%” and “&” and “3” are formatting artifacts and weren’t things I originally typed:

It would have been one of these versions; note that these were from back when Macs stored filetype in creator codes instead of file extensions. Since I’m checking the Wikipedia article, I see libwps and LibreOffice contain converters, so I guess I’ll try those…

eyyyy it worked! This is how it’s SUPPOSED to look! (Yes, I made all the text in my Diary colored red for some reason when I was a kid; I was weird)

…so anyways, the whole point of all this was to show that I opposed the War in Iraq even before it started. Support for it wasn’t unanimous! People knew it was wrong at the time!
