Thread for day 2 of this week's session starts here. Yesterday I kinda lost energy to tweet everything, so, for today, I'd just like to set forward this principle: if a bill goes by on voice vote w/no debate, I'll skip over it. Instead, I'll just try to focus on contested bills.
-
about to get started now
-
back to gun nuts trying to expand their rights to gun nuttery. Blech. #NHPolitics
-
Now we're discussing HB539, on a requirement for warrants for phone data. Seems like a reasonable idea, but Rep. Meuse was convincing in arguing that the implementation needs work. Passed on voice vote anyways though. #NHPolitics
-
Now we're onto the Education Committee with CACR3: Republicans want to let religious schools get state money. I'm all for religious schools existing, but we gotta maintain the separation of church and state, so I'll be voting against this. #NHPolitics
-
Separation of church and state is actually itself a Christian principle: see Jesus saying "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's" and St. Augustine's separation between the City of God and City of Man. #NHPolitics
-
Christians should WANT to keep their religious schools separate from the government in order to keep them independent. Erasing the boundary between the two is just dangerous. #NHPolitics
-
Oh boy, here comes a parliamentary rabbit hole...
-
Ok onto HB69 now; it's another separation of church and state issue. Republicans really want to violate the Establishment Clause. Sigh. #NHPolitics
-
Christianity is a better religion when it takes the side of the oppressed rather than that of the oppressor. Emperor Constantine ruined the religion by spreading it by force, and House Republicans seem to want to do likewise. #NHPolitics
-
If Republicans truly trusted God they wouldn't have to be passing legislation to require the state to defend that motto. God is too powerful to be harmed by how people decide to engrave certain inscriptions or not. #NHPolitics
-
Anyways we're onto HB71, about school district emergency meetings and collective bargaining. Republicans are wanting to go mucking around with things that don't need to be mucked with again. #NHPolitics
-
Next is HB140 about bullying and cyberbullying. Rep. Luneau is making the case that this actually weakens existing bullying laws, despite being written as an anti-bullying bill. I'll trust him on this and vote against this bill. #NHPolitics
-
Next is HB182, on approval of coursework being transferred between schools. I was under the impression that transferring credits btwn schools already worked perfectly fine; I did it with my high school AP courses for college. Don't get why the GOP wants to mess w/it. #NHPolitics
-
If even @tjsnh admits "it's a confusing bill" that's a pretty good sign that it actually is in fact pretty confusing; he's generally pretty good at understanding stuff. #NHPolitics
-
Next is HB278, another GOP attempt to transfer power to charter schools.
-
Next is HB282, another attempt to weaken public schools in favor of private schools instead. Stop trying to privatize education, Republicans! #NHPolitics
-
Next is HB319, requiring university and college students to pass the USCIS citizenship test. We already passed a bill to do this for high school students earlier this term; my argument now is the same as my argument then: it's redundant. #NHPolitics
-
If both this bill and the high school bill pass, a new citizen would have to take the same test 3 times: once for high school, once to become a citizen, and once for college. I have nothing against the test itself, it's just nothing that needs to be repeated 3 times. #NHPolitics
-
Oh apparently taking it in high school would fulfill the college requirement; I stand corrected. It's still redundant though; it's still extra paperwork to say that you've already taken it. Stop wasting people's time. #NHPolitics
-
Wow, a single-vote margin, 188-187... attendance is so important. #NHPolitics
-
Next is HB321 on gifted students programs. Post your favorite "former gifted students" memes in the replies. #NHPolitics
-
Ok this notice about lunch sponsorship seems inappropriate. Lobbyists shouldn't be able to pay to get shoutouts from the speaker. #NHPolitics
-
Back from lunch; onto HB388, which is about changing a pupil's school. Let's hear what they have to say... #NHPolitics
-
Why does education policy always have to be so complicated? Can't we skip ahead to Election Law already?
-
Why do we have to have motions for men to remove their jackets? Such a silly ritual
-
Wait... Max Abramson is actually on the right side of HB458? What?
-
Whoa we actually managed to win something!
-
er wait, maybe not? Procedural tomfoolery incoming?
-
eh, nvm. Anyways, onto Election Law bills now... We're onto HB77, about clerks notifying the Secretary of State on candidate filings. #NHPolitics
-
Next is HB98, about changing the date of our state primaries. I do agree that it could go a bit earlier than September, but June is too early. Put them in July or August instead. #NHPolitics
-
Next is HB223, on political parties getting access to lists of absentee ballot requests. That went by rather quick. #NHPolitics
-
HB263: on campaign finance reform, messing around with different dollar amounts. idk what else to say about it. #NHPolitics
-
HB285: on the verification of voter checklists. Sounds like Republicans being paranoid about nonexistent voter fraud again. And apparently the DMV is involved? Why are they the ones handle address changes? Stop centering car-owners. #NHPolitics
-
HB291: on inspection of absentee ballot lists. Seems like pointless makework combined with privacy violations. #NHPolitics
-
HB292: makes the absentee ballot application harder. We need to be making it easier to vote, not harder. This bill is bad. #NHPolitics
-
HB326: another bill about lists of absentee voters. Didn't we already do this? These bills are all starting to run together. #NHPolitics
-
HB391: on campaign finance reporting by political cmtes. This is 1 of those issues where, if I were just being selfish, I'd agree w/the GOP as I'd like to simplify the paperwork I have to file, but I can't be selfish; gotta rep my constituents even if it means more work for me.
-
HB523FN: on the taking of photos when registering to vote. We already do that, this just strictens it to remove certain exceptions that we really ought to be keeping instead. #NHPolitics
-
Next is HB85, which would move NH to Atlantic Standard Time. I dunno. It doesn't really make sense to me for NH to do this unless Maine goes first, and AFAIK they're not going to do so, so I guess I'll vote against it. #NHPolitics
-
HB218: on itinerant vendors. Shame we're not getting a full debate on this one; I could use some more info on it. #NHPolitics
-
Next is... wait, HB273? I thought HB345 would be next; at least, that's what's next in my notes... I'm confused... #NHPolitics
-
ok NOW we're onto HB345, on establishing a license for mushroom harvesters. I hope someone makes a Mario reference, if there's a chance for debate. #NHPolitics
-
(darn, no debate; oh well)
-
HB417: on the governor's emergency powers. Apparently this is different from the similar bad provision that was in the GOP budget, so this one is supposed to be better? I dunno; listening to debate. #NHPolitics
-
oh fuck HB544 is next after this
-
here we go; brace for impact
-
Oh wait they're tabling it? Is that because they got it into the budget successfully?
-
Well that was anticlimactic
-
some cosmetology/esthetics bills under consideration currently
-
I'm fading again
-
Done with ED&A; onto the bills out of the HHS cmte
-
Work requirements for Medicaid are bad. Let's repeal them. #NHPolitics
-
I'm tired
-
We're onto Judiciary's bills now
-
HB227 is a Republican bill to make it easier for landlords to evict people. We need to stop it. #NHPolitics
-
hey we've got a data protection bill before us; that's cool! #NHPolitics
-
Aw man Rep. Horrigan is disappointing me here; I thought he'd be on the right side of this one... #NHPolitics
-
ok we're closing up now
