            1. When was the last time a Republican ran for president on being “the guy who can work with Democrats”? @jackcalifano/1401729250726580233

(I was going to leave out the “for president” qualifier, but then I remembered it happens all the time in races for governor of blue states; it’s how you wound up with Charlie Baker, Phil Scott, Larry Hogan, etc.)

Mitt Romney COULD have run for president as “being able to work with Dems” on his record of being a former blue state gov, but he chose not to, due to the nature of the Republican primary electorate. Look at how he ran away from Romneycare after it became the basis for Obamacare

John McCain’s description as a “maverick” did in a way to serve to distance him from other Republicans, but not in a that suggests he worked well with Dems. To the contrary, it seemed to suggest he didn’t work well with ANYONE.

GWB’s attempt to brand himself as a “compassionate conservative” was also an attempt at distancing himself from other Republicans, but again, that’s not precisely the same as trying to argue he’d work well with Dems.

And then before that with Bob Dole I was too young to be paying attention to politics so I can’t really say anything about him or anyone before him.
