So yeah session today... I am kinda dreading it... #NHPolitics
-
how much of a suck-up do you have to be to be a kid holding a "pro-parent" sign at a pair of dueling protests where the other side is the pro-kid side?
-
First time I've seen this door open; turns out the NH House has a pretty nice server rack provided by @IRCVoting right by Reps Hall!
-
ok time for everyone to take their seats
-
Pastor Bob starting his prayer with a moment of silence for those lost to gun violence; we need more than that, IMO
-
National Anthem: uh... it sounded like "Brandon Statesman" but there are four of them (barbershop quartet), so shouldn't it be "Statesmen" instead? Did I mishear, or did Speaker Packard mispronounce, or...?
-
Starting off with SB200, the redistricting bill
-
(these are Committee of Conference reports we're voting on btw)
-
Can't say "Weare" without someone quipping "Where?" (groan)
-
huh, John Burt actually opposes the map in SB200, apparently...
-
Max Abramson is flip-flopping; he *was* going to oppose the current map, but is now supporting it
-
Paul Bergeron speaking against SB200 now
-
the last time we considered this bill was on the 5th; the map has changed since then, though: @cooljeanius/1522265604413087744
-
reminder that my main problem with the current map is that it puts Concord and Manchester together, giving away Concord's control of #NH02 to Manchester: @cooljeanius/1525234620815626241
-
New map passes 176-171; if we'd had better attendance from the Democrats we could have beaten it...
-
Speaker Packard is letting Dean of the House Laura Pantelakos take over presiding for a few votes
-
ok so she took a few voice votes and is now handing the gavel back to the Speaker
-
we're offering a resolution commemorating her retirement
-
back to voting on Committee of Conference reports (on voice vote)
-
Rep. Altschiller moving to suspend the rules so we can try the background checks bill again
-
Thank you @DebrasATeam for your efforts to stop gun violence! #NHPolitics
-
Rep. Roy is accusing us of politicizing a tragedy even though political decisions led to it
-
Thank you Rep. Altschiller for saying what needs to be said!
-
Motion to suspend rules fails; Republicans continue to stymie any attempts to do anything about gun violence
-
ah I see there's a bill restoring the commission on demographic trends coming up (HB1106); that is relevant to my interests
-
Rep. Sylvia gave his PI about Medicare even though HB103 is actually about Medicaid
-
Yeah we passed HB103! One more step towards Medicaid dental benefits!
-
Also thank you Marjorie Smith for pointing out the difference between Medicaid and Medicare!
-
Motion to print remarks from rules suspension debate in the permanent journal now
-
Well we passed the "print remarks" motion at least
-
stuff going by on voice vote again
-
we managed to defeat HB1333 on a division vote
-
we seem to be putting off some of the more controversial votes
-
I hate it when we get "Listen to Debate" bills that don't actually get any debate
-
hm apparently the reason we can't vote on the controversial bills yet is because the Senate hasn't sent them to us yet
-
Looks like Tim Lang has shaved... and apparently the Dems won the House softball game, 16-3! (I didn't attend)
-
Rep. Maggiore accepts an antler trophy on behalf of the Dem softball team from Rep. Lang
-
We're doing the "Unanimous Consent" speeches now while we wait for the Senate to send us remaining bills (those quotes are scare quotes)
-
Rep. Prudhomme-O'Brien giving a unanimous consent speech on the foster care system
-
my fiancée's sister is a foster parent in New Jersey (which results in my fiancée having to help her care for her fosters), and they both would probably have a few things to say on this topic
-
oh Rep. Prudhomme-O'Brien is making this about abortion now...
-
Rep. Labranche is giving a unanimous consent speech about Québéc nationalism now; giving it first in French and then will repeat it in English
-
oh that was "Pierre ELLIOTT Trudeau" he said; in the French version it sounded like "Idiot Trudeau"
-
Rep. Walsh? ...Welsh? is giving a retirement speech
-
current speech: about Memorial Day
-
Now @LathaMangipudi giving a speech on AAPI Heritage Month
-
looks like we're going to be putting the remaining votes off until after lunch
-
A lunch break that lasts until 5:15 would be rather long! (it's actually until 1:15)
-
ok we're returning from lunch now to vote on our last bills
-
time for the HB1431 debate
-
motion is to table
-
looks like this will be a GOP vs. GOP debate
-
motion to table HB1431 fails 169-173
-
your distinction about "oh we'll only out kids if there are school policies about it" doesn't really help, Rep. Blasek. Schools shouldn't have policies like that.
-
Good grief Rep. Roy is ready making the "Teachers are groomers" argument from the well here
-
-
Rep. Roy is the (current) worst
-
Finally, an "against" speaker... Sue Mullen is listing all the problems with the bill
-
If we're going to make teachers do all this extra reporting work, we could at least try to pay them better for it, but as far as I can tell, this bill doesn't provide for that
-
yeah some of my classmates in elementary school definitely had abusive parents that I wouldn't want teachers having to report to
-
I really hate the way GOP characterize schools as "systems"; it's so dehumanizing to teachers
-
teachers are people, not faceless cogs in a system
-
Anyways we beat HB1431 171-176! Doing a motion to reconsider now
-
Motion to reconsider HB1431 fails 170-177; next is HB1567
-
HB1567 is relative to consequences resulting from election official misconduct
-
HB1567 passes; time for a "print remarks" motion on the HB1431 debate
-
Time for the HB1661; this GOP speaker against this bill is spreading FUD about the housing portions of it
-
I had a constituent who wrote against the parking garage portion of this bill, but this GOP guy opposing the housing portions of it is making me want to support the bill overall
-
Didn't quite catch it but it sounded like he said "This bill would bring more public housing, & nobody wants that" and, well, I live in public housing. Sure, it has issues (bedbugs), but I am glad it exists. Concord Housing had to close applications due to not having enough units
-
Anyways we need more housing of all types: affordable, public, workforce, market-rate, whatever.
-
Some tension between John Burt and Speaker Packard as Burt speculates about corruption
-
Reminder not to quote Rep. Burt when he makes that dumb quote about what he thinks about taxation; there's a retweet bot that retweets tweets with that phrase and will attract all sorts of idiots into your mention
-
Some Proudhonist needs to make a competing bot that does the same thing for tweets containing the phrase "Property is theft"
-
all the worst GOP reps are speaking against this bill; we're going from Rep. Sylvia speculating he might be lead-poisoned, to Rep. Abramson complaining about the omnibus nature of this bill
-
some GOP Rep. moves to table HB1661 immediately after a question about what happens when the Storrs Street garage falls down (which could happen in the near future)
-
HB1661 passes by a wide margin; time to adjourn
-
...why is Rep. Abramson speaking? I thought we already did the unanimous consent speeches...
-
well I guess we're getting a second set of unanimous consent speeches
-
Rep. Altschiller got as far as saying "on Tuesday" and Republicans have already objected to letting her speak
-
Rep. Altschiller gets to continue! I guess a bunch of Republicans must have already left
-
This is a really good speech Rep. Altschiller is giving; I hope people are ready to trim this portion of the YouTube livestream for sharing purposes
-
...well, except for the part where she praised police for running in, which didn't actually happen here. The police actually kept people out at Uvalde.
-
...but anyways, except for the police part, that was a great speech overall. Time to adjourn for real now...
