So, these worries about “oh no TikTok is from China” are leading the US government to ask stupid questions about FOSS projects like @gnutools that transcend national boundaries: gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc/2022-July/239109.html
-
To be clear, many of the concerns about TikTok are actually legitimate; my complaint here is just that the same concerns shouldn’t be applied to FOSS projects where everything is already public
-
It would actually be pretty cool if the US government contributed more to FOSS (besides just Ghidra and expect), but we should do that by just contributing to existing FOSS projects instead of restarting from scratch: gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc/2022-July/239124.html
-
Hm looks like there were more legal issues on the gcc lists while I was gone (@gcc_rust might have to change names?); we should really look at updating this area of trademark law to make things friendlier to FOSS devs: gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc/2022-July/239114.html
-
Then again, reading further into the thread, it sounds like the Rust Foundation is actually being reasonable, but some additional clarity could still be useful so people don’t go making mistaken readings of the law: gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc/2022-July/239127.html

ok so yeah reading further into the thread it devolves into a flamewar; maybe it’s better to just ignore it after all…
