The whole “sensitivity readers” thing wouldn’t really be so bad, IMO, if the books being modified were stored in public version control systems (e.g. GitHub, Wikisource, etc.), and all edits had to survive a public pull request process.

Your “sensitivity edits” couldn’t get merged back upstream? Well, just keep them in your own fork, then. If people like your edits better, they’ll start using your fork as their new upstream instead. Just be clear and open about authorship, responsibility, and text lineage.
