Ok I left the NHPR thing to get over to the LOB for my committee's final executive session of this year's crossover; we've got 2 bills left, so this might be a short thread. Although, one of them is controversial (SB132, the anti-sanctuary one), so, who knows... #NHPolitics
-
Subs today: someone (missed name) for Guthrie, @rosemarierung in for @LathaMangipudi, and @jonahowheeler in for Al Howland... Guthrie being out might result in a different outcome here...
-
Starting off with SB47; David Preece has an amendment that adds back the conservation commissions and regional planning commissions
-
amendment adopted 18-2; Cahill and Brown were the two (thanks to @rosemarierung for helping me confirm!)
-
previous exec session on SB47 (it's the housing study cmte): @cooljeanius/1656345032670969869
-
SB47 passes OTP/A by the same margin (18-2, with Brown and Cahill as the 2); goes on the consent calendar
-
onto SB132, the anti-sanctuary bill
-
Rep. Pauer has an amendment
-
btw I think I saw that Rep. Preece had recently created an account on here, but I can't seem to find it at the moment... if anyone on the #NHPolitics hashtag can tag him in for me, I'd appreciate it
-
Rep. Pauer's amendment is trying to rebrand sanctuary policies as "restrictive policies"
-
they think people won't notice if they just slap a different coat of paint on it
-
("they" referring to both Rep. Pauer and Rep. Aylward)
-
Rep. Yokela is listing some concerns with the amendment; sounds like he might join Dems in voting against it?
-
yeah he says he opposes this specific amendment, but remains open to working on further amendment
-
Rep. Lascelles supports the amendment; he mentions about the media bringing immigration to the forefront of people's minds, which reminds me of when he had Fox News blaring in the background when we were on Zoom meetings in 2021, and was mourning Rush Limbaugh's death
-
(in case you need an idea of what Rep. Lascelles's media diet is like)
-
dang it, while I remembered my charging brick today, I forgot my cord... my phone might die...
-
Rep. MacDonald (the clerk) is relating his experience working with the State Police; he claims that he has never seen racial profiling taking place
-
btw, apropos of some of the discussion here: washingtonpost.com/immigration/illegal-alien-assimilation/2021/04/19/9a2f878e-9ebc-11eb-b7a8-014b14aeb9e4_story.html
-
(thanks to @mariapz1974 for the link!)
-
amendment fails 9-11, with Rep. Yokela joining the Dems in defeating the amendment
-
Now @jonahowheeler is telling about how Peterborough both has a sanctuary policy and still manages to collaborate with immigration officials
-
Rep. Aylward is defending her use of the term "alien" after Rep. Wheeler called her out on it
-
Rep. Yokela now tying this in with the drug war as a reason for opposing this
-
ok the Rep. subbing for Rep. Guthrie is Rep. Sellers
-
Rep. Sellers signaled support for the bill, which confirms my suspicion that his substitution for Rep. Guthrie is probably giving the anti-sanctuary side an extra vote, as Rep. Guthrie is a "local control" type Republican who wouldn't like being restricted as a selectperson
-
Rep. Turcotte hates @GraffitiRadical
-
OTP motion fails 9-11, with Rep. Yokela joining the Dems
-
IMO the term "illegals" should only be used to refer to people when it means adherents to the philosophy of illegalism, such as the Bonnot Gang: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegalism
-
ITL motion on the bill *also* fails with a 10-10 tie... so Rep. Yokela wants neither OTP nor ITL on this bill... so what *does* he want on it, then?
-
ok so there are no further motions on the bill, so it will go to the floor without recommendation
-
ok, adjourned (just as my phone's battery gets down to 1%); we're done with committee business until the period for returning to retained bills
-
btw, to address the point about unchecked immigration potentially leading to "chaos", I'd just like to remind people that the "Chaotic Good" character alignment exists: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChaoticGood
